Gulmarg - The Meadow of Flowers

Renowned for hosting Asia’s highest cable car (Gulmarg gondola), the hill station of Gulmarg lies around 48 kilometres (1.5-hour drive) away from Srinagar city. Gulmarg is clustered between the tall and mighty peaks of the Pir Panjal, a sub-range of the northern Himalayas.
The paradise of Gulmarg defines the meaning of beauty while showcasing its vast green meadows, verdant forests, frozen lakes, soothing streams, clean atmosphere and tall Gulmarg gondola. Turning into a white heaven in winter, the place tops among the best ski resorts in India and Asia. Having smooth curvy slopes, Gulmarg becomes a perfect skiing destination.
The name ‘Meadow of Flowers’ is given by Yousuf Shah Chak, who was a ruler of Kashmir in the 16th century AD. The ruler frequented the place and witnessed a large variety of wildflowers, which led him to name it Gulmarg, meaning ‘meadow of flowers.’
Mughal Ruler Jahangir also visited Gulmarg and collected many varieties of wildflowers. This makes one wonder, what kind of a flower heaven would Gulmarg be? Besides the wildflowers, there are other marvels presented by the famous hill station.
Other than the Gulmarg gondola, the hill station boasts one of the highest golf courses in Asia. The Gulmarg Golf Course happens to be a delight for golf lovers, providing a heavenly golfing experience amid dense forests and silence.
The Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve becomes an important area for the protection of various rare and magnificent wild species. Hosting exotic Himalayan flora and fauna, the reserve is home to many endangered species such as the musk deer.
Leaving aside the Gulmarg gondola, the Strawberry Valley in the vicinity hosts stunning Himalayan beauty and a small population of tribals. The place is dotted with tribal mud houses, beautifying the area in the presence of wild strawberry vegetation.
