Srinagar, meaning the ‘City of Shri’, is the second largest metropolitan area in the Himalayas. The city is located in the central part of the Kashmir Valley. Having a large population, Srinagar is the only city in the Kashmir Valley.
Srinagar city is believed to have been founded by the Gonanda Dynasty in the 6th century. The city has seen numerous reigns under rulers like the Mauryas, Mughals, Afghans, Dogras, and others. Srinagar sees its mention in several historical travel records like the chronicle of the Chinese traveler, Huein Tsang. The area has also been active in trade practices in the past.
Initially, the city was a religious center of Hindus and saw a shift towards Islam after the first Islamic ruler, Rinchana. In the 13th century CE, numerous Sufi preachers visited the valley and spread Sufism to every corner of the area. Today, shrines and mosques can be seen in every corner of the city, giving it the title of ‘City of Shrines’.
Srinagar famous places like Dal Lake, Nigeen Lake, and Anchar Lake are the major water bodies of the city. Having many lakes in its lap, the city is sometimes referred to as the ‘Venice of the East’. The Jhelum River cuts through the Srinagar city, bisecting it into two halves. Numerous bridges connect the two halves of the city.
Dal Lake, being the largest lake in Srinagar, forms a major tourist attraction among Srinagar's famous places.
