1. History
The earliest reference to the history of Kashmir is found in Kalhana’s Rajatrangini. Therein lies the chronicles of royal dynasties and the history of rulers in Kashmir. Written in Sanskrit and composed around 1148-50, Rajatrangini is the oldest book giving a historical account of early Kashmir. The name ‘Kashmir’ is believed to be derived from the Vedic Saint Sage Kashyapa and the ‘mir’ denoting Kashyapa’s lake or mountain, thus the name Kashmir. Kashmir has, for ages, piqued the interest of many rulers. Ashoka the Great (304 – 232 BCE) is credited with founding the summer capital, Srinagar. The Mughal Emperor Jahangir was so fascinated with Kashmir’s enchanting beauty that he referred to it as ‘Jannat’.
