All you need to know is what clothes to pack that will compliment your Kashmir trip depending on the season and time of year you are visiting.
Spring – March to April
As winter sets in, so does the start of the blooming season in Kashmir – locally known as ‘Sonth’. The rejuvenating season revives and gives life to everything still. The snowy-white landscape begins to turn into a riot of colours. The finest view enveloped with the lush greenery, meadows of flowers, running lakes, pine forests, and picturesque hills come into sight. Spring marks the renewal of life from a dormant phase. These are the months where layering is key to staying warm. Flared pants with a long sleeve shirt and a winter jacket will keep you comfortable when travelling outdoors. Besides keeping a woollen scarf, gloves, ear muffs, or hat are additional items that can help keep you cosy.
Summer – May to June
The snow melting to form rivulets marks the start of summer in Kashmir. The scenery comes alive with the glacier-fed rivers, and so does the potential for adventure with activities such as camping, fly fishing, and trekking. During the day, the temperature in summer ranges from 20 to 30 degrees Celsius. Clothes that you must keep include cotton tees, t-shirts, jeans, trekking pants, trousers, etc. Also, keep a pair of scarves and shawls to drape around when visiting temples & mosques or in case you are wearing sleeveless tops. At night, the temperature drops and gets a little cold, so you should carry jackets or zippers just in case. Besides, also have an umbrella and raincoats for any change in weather to stay assured.

Monsoon – July to August
When the clear skies get clouded, and It’s raining, you must carry waterproof bags, pants and jackets to avoid any unnecessary hassle during your journey. Undoubtedly, monsoon is the season when whichever way you turn, greenery will follow. The Valley receives little to moderate rain during monsoon. Due to its unpredictability, the weather may get warmer during the day and colder at night. With the temperature around 25-degree celsius, pack light clothes, rain-protective wear & gears and a few sets of cotton and woollen clothes. Wear comfortable garments made from Khadi or linen fabric to help you easily cover your journey. Surely, carrying umbrellas and raincoats goes without saying.
Autumn – September to November
Kashmir’s beauty in autumn is a season shedding Nature’s natural greenery to a land carpeted with golden-brown leaves of Chinar trees. The season is a hint of the arrival of harsh winter. For farmers and gardeners, autumn marks the end of the growing season. The period between the end of September and mid-November in Kashmir is known as ‘Harud’. Though the season symbolises a sad ending, the land of Paradise rejuvenates the dying and breathes the air of mystical beauty into it. Indescribably beautiful, pack the best of your clothes to get clicked against the most romantic setting in the Vale. Light woollen clothes are ideal for wearing during this season.
Winter – December to February
With the end of November arrives the harshest of winter, locally known as ‘Chillai Kalan’. For 40 days, the Valley is deep-frozen under snow and ice, leaving the rivers and brooks dry. However, slowly but surely, the snow begins to thaw and replenish the reservoirs, providing much-needed water for Summer. The traditional outfit of the Valley is a Pheran – a long gown that extends to their feet. They use an earthen pot (Kangri) filled with hot embers to keep warm. Even with the cold weather, life goes on as usual. If you’re planning on visiting the Kashmir Valley during the colder months, pack plenty of warm clothes, including cardigans, pullovers, sweaters, trench coats, socks, caps, mufflers, warmers, earmuffs, and gloves.
